Dr. Frances Arnold is a 2018 recipient of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. The work she received the prize for regards directed evolution with enzymes - in other words, using a method similar to natural selection to create and enzyme that will successfully created desired products with high yield and selectivity. I attended the talk due to interest in the work itself and also a desire to see a lecture given by a Nobel Laureate. Attending the lecture (and consequently missing 10 minutes of the quiz section which the lecture overlapped due to technical issues) was possibly one of the best decisions I have ever made. I learned an immense amount of the process of directed evolution, as pioneered by Dr. Arnold, along with her current work in the field. I also was able to experience a lecture given by someone with a lot of practice and a wonderful sense of humor. She has become one of my role models - a very successful female scientist who has not lost her sense of humor and can find amusement in situations which are not always amusing - such as when a reporter completely misreported her work due to her reluctance to reveal too much information before a publication. In the future I hope to attend more lectures like hers and also to follow the research produced by her lab group. I have attached the information card given preceding her lecture.
