chem 165HONORS GENERAL CHEMISTRY (III)
CHEM 165 is the third class in the Honors General Chemistry series. Unlike the other two classes, it does not focus on a particularly linear course of information. Instead the class introduced a variety of topics in chemistry beyond the absolute basics and laid foundations for future classes in inorganic, organic, and physical chemistry. Professor Cossairt focused on teaching through examples and I found studying for the material, especially organic chemistry, difficult. By forming a good study group I was able to better understand the material and think of the it in different ways. I learned a lot about different types of chemistry from this course and will likely join research in some type of organic chemistry lab at some point. During this course a partner and I wrote a paper and created a poster on current research in solar energy. We synthesized information from many publications and presented the poster to our peers, our professor, and some graduate students that came to the presentations. This project taught me how to better analyze scientific papers, determine trends and conclusions, and present to others. My artifact for this course is the poster we made.
Art 190INTRODUCTION TO DRAWING
Art 190 is the first art class and a prerequisite for almost every other art class offered at the UW. I enjoy art and, although I will not be able to also get a BA in Painting and Drawing, I hope to take further art classes. This class taught the importance of observation. Much of the class was dedicated to contour drawings, and the attached photos emphasize that style of drawing. Since I normally work with shading and had never before taken a class focused on mainly linework, it was a struggle to re-learn to draw in the way necessary and an interesting challenge. The close observation skills I learned from this class can actually be applied to the classes in my major and my research since experiments in biochemistry generally require close observation and analysis of the results.
